Post 3: Peer review

Hello everyone!
When I heard the words "Peer review" I didn't know what was it but after the teacher explain us that a Peer review is when another person review a manuscript from someone and gives ideas to improve it. Then we saw a video with tips to be a good peer reviewer and make a perfect job. So now I will give my opinion about a "Step by Step Guide to Reviewing a Manuscript" that is a section in the website authorservices.wiley.com. The first thing that we have to do is decide the Report Format, there are two: informal structure and formal structure. I think that I prefer an informal structure because that generates more confident between the author and the reviewer but in the most of cases the structure depends on the manuscript because there are some peer reviews that needs a formal structure to be presented. After that it is necessary to do a "skim-read" that means the first reading of the article to form the first impression and handle aims, keys and conclusions. I find it an important step because makes easier the following steps and is the opportunity to decide if you will accept or reject the paper.
After the first reading and identify the important points you have. The best to do a good first reading is make notes. Then it's time to do the second reading that needs more concentration because you have to analyse each paragraph carefully, and pay attention to details, this reading it supposed to be faster because you already have the ideas clear. The second read is important to prepare the article for publication so you have to confirm that each section is complete. In my opinion more than the report structure, the confidentiality is the most important aspect because the fact of give any text to another person for evalution requires a lot of bravery because I think that everyone leave a part of themselves in a manuscript. For me all the things that I mentioned before are important because they are formalities but there is something that is more essential and that it's have the courage to help others to improve their work.

  1. Glad you liked the topic. Peer-reviewing could be very challenging sometimes as we could be easily biased by both internal and external imprints. Above all, you have to be as professional as possible and strict in following the recommendations or tips editors could supply to you when training for peer-review. What you need also to keep in mind is the human side of the activity and consider that time, effort and resources have been invested in creating a script, therefore, your feedback should always be judicious and solid. Great posting!
